Fossil
Park
This fossil-rich 14
hectares of land is 10 km outside Langebaan. Fossils were found here during
the 40 years it was mined for phosphate. These include:
the first bear
discovered south of the Sahara (Agriotherium africanum)
lion-sized sabre-toothed cats
long-horned, short-necked giraffes (sivatheres)
three-toed horses
a megatooth shark
Over 70 scientific
papers have been published on these finds.
The Park is currently
under construction and will feature the fossils themselves, education,
research and eco-tourism. Pay a visit to see the work in progress.
