"Time to slow down"

It's time to get back to basics. "Foodie", "gourmet", "gourmand", "celebrity chef" all big words being thrown around like gospel and spices these days, making life difficult for restaurants and cooks to know exactly where they fit in and how to please those ever evolving pallets of the patrons frequenting their dining rooms.

And what better season and place to get back to basics and slow things down than winter in the Westcoast: Time to get comfortable again around fireplaces, dinner tables, friendly faces and a looong slooow glass of your favourite winter warmer.

Winter food is about celebrating and contemplating the abundance of the summer that's gone. The preserves and pickles the cured meats, the comfort foods that need love, care and a slow hand to bring out the flavour.

Breakfast

Breakfast with us is like buttering you bread on both sides.

If you indulge early and with no haste chances are that the rest of the day will follow suite. Crackling fires, warm pastries, home baked seadloaf from tannie Jane's peusel spens, our own Toulouse style sausage, artisan roasted coffee from our well trained barista's, preserves from "Koekie se ma in Aurora" not to mention the flapjacks with bacon, berries, banana and maple syrup all served 07:00 - 11:00 in the morning.

And then there is biiiig biiiig scones and kippers and eggs Benedict and, and, and...

Lunch
Pub Lunches

The thing about winter food is that what seems to be to much work in summer becomes a very fulfilling meal in all senses of the word in winter. You want to spend some time in the kitchen, or eat food that takes a little bit of time to bring out robust warm earthy flavours.

Knowing that it been slow cooking since this morning there's nothing like a bowl of heart warming oxtail and veg soup with crusty farmstyle bread, or venison pie with plum preserve to slow you down for lunch before taking on the last part of the day.

And if there's no need to go back to work or any of life's other trivia then linger just a little longer with some gourmet coffee .Why not have your cake and eat it.

Sunday Lunches
Sunday Lunches

Most of the time we eat to get through the day; it’s about energy. Sundays we eat to be content. To reward ourselves for a weeks work well done. Perhaps to celebrate with a final leisurely meal before life takes us on Monday again.

Sticking to that homely relaxed feel we serve a “Lekker bord kos” in the traditional roast sense of the word. Every last Sunday of each month we host a Local Seafood Sunday, serving only produce from the Cape waters. If a big Lunch doesn’t appeal to you, you can always order from our Light Lunch Menu

Seeing that you pallet is looked after, we’ll then treat your soul to some of the best local musicians, keeping it slow and relaxed from 13:00 pm – 15:00 pm. Please ensure to make a booking as space is filled very quickly, Especially in winter!

Dinners
Dinners

The nice thing about the shorter days in winter is those longer lounging evenings. Fires going, sherry flowing, conversations is slower as people tend to huddle and be a bit more intimate around the dinner table.

No fuss as you go for three courses, it's cold and your body needs it. Should I start with the ham hock and pea soup, maybe the Altwick cheese salad from a local cheese lady in Trekoskraal.

Pork-belly with the crackling left on, seafood curry, big decisions to make as you slowly open another vintage red from our great selection.

Another log on the fire as you wade through desert choices of cape date and brandy pudding, malva with real custard or a local cheese platter with preserved figs and home made savoury biscuits from the peusel spens.

Tea-Time
Tea

If you manage to tear yourself away from your day’s activities and find yourself at The Farmhouse Hotel at tea-time, then we recommend you treat yourself to tea and scones. You’re sure to satiate your mid-afternoon hunger pangs with our giant freshly baked scones with whipped cream and homemade jam. Take your tea on the terrace and watch the boats drift out on the lagoon when the sun hangs lower in the sky and illuminates the water.

Legends Bar
Bar

Its about legends and locals still alive.

Members of 4 Recce and civilians remembering the fight of ’76. Even Magnus Malan wrote a letter.

The Basson broers : Steek die Swartland aan die brand – faam. The giant bunny, the helicopter, the Play boy girls.

Gawie Fagan : Bohemian architect, lone Cape to Rio Yachtsman and Mensch in the true sense of the word.

Its all there on the walls and sometimes in real life as you have a malt or wee drum around the fire place.
